Inside Out with Iqbal Niyazi
This Sahitya Kala Parishad Award-winning playwright has finally published a compilation of his seminal works.

Mumbai, February 8: What is Iqbal Niyazi’s ‘first book’ Sab Theek Hai about?
A prominent Urdu playwright-director, Niyazi’s book comprises his five best-known plays, including the Sahitya Kala Parishad Award-winning Aur Kitne Jalianwalla Bagh. And critics in Urdu journals are already raving about it. “I never realised this book was so important,” says the 44-year-old, who has written over 30 plays in the last two decades.
Why has he written 17 versions of Aur Kitne Jalianwalla Bagh?
When he first penned it in 1982, it won him the Best Script Award at the Indian People’s Theatre Association’s (IPTA) inter-college drama competition. “I wrote it to protest the corruption and criminalisation of politics in our society. We all live in a fortified ground, like Jalianwalla Bagh, and are being assaulted all the time,” feels the playwright, who began writing and directing plays while studying at Ismail Yusuf College, Jogeshwari. There he also adapted Neil Simon’s plays like Barefoot In The Park as Deewana Hoon Pagal Hoon, and The Odd Couple as Aa Bail Mujhe Maar. “But as I grew older, I saw new forms of corruption. Only the faces changed; the crime thrived,” he shrugs.
Why is drama an essential outlet for him?
“Agar natak na likhoon to pagal ho jaaon (If I don’t write plays, I will go mad),” explains Niyazi, who set up his own group, Kirdar, a decade ago. Along with larger political issues, his work also tackled the social milieu. One of his more popular plays, Amma Main Kya Karoon, is a hilarious Muslim social satire, “showing how a middle-class family copes with day-to-day problems,” explains Niyazi, whose father, Shor Niyazi, was an actor with famous Parsi Theatre director Agha Hashr Kashmiri. “I grew up listening to my father talk about Agha and his plays. So I guess it came to me naturally,” he says.
What about his research work on Habib Tanvir?
His doctoral work on the theatre doyen is almost complete. “Three years ago, I decided to do my thesis on Habib saab. When I approached him, he was pleasantly surprised: ‘You are the first person who will do a paper on me, in Urdu. I am quite excited’,” recalls Niyazi, who had extended interactions with Tanvir at the latter’s Bhopal house. “Apart from being a great artiste and director, he’s a man of determination. See how he has nurtured his Naya Theatre in Chhattisgarh. He has kept alive the folk culture of Madhya Pradesh through his plays,” feels Niyazi, who hopes to submit his dissertation to the University of Mumbai in a few months.”Habib saab is getting older and frailer. He told me to bring it out in his lifetime.”
What does he next have up his sleeve?
He’s now working on a book of plays, based on popular stories in Urdu. “It’s called Kahaniyon Ka Rangmanch and will include several authors, including Mumbai-based Salam Bib Razzak and Sajid Rashid. It should be out in a few months,” he informs.

Iqbal Niyazi is not an original playwright but an excellent manipulator!
Does he have any explanation for the following facts?
In the year 1982 when the play, 'Aur Kitne Jalianwala Bagh' ('Sab Theek Hai')was staged in the 'Indian People's Theatre Association's (IPTA) inter-collegiate-play competition, the name of the writers of the said play were given as Aslam Pervez and Iqbal Niyazi and both of them jointly got the writer's prize. (Later Aslam Pervez joined Nadira Babbar's group 'Ekjute' and translated and adapted few plays for the group).
Sadiq Talpatri is the original writer of the play,'Amma Main Kya Karoon?' which Iqbal Niyazi now claims to be his sole creation. When this play was staged in Bhartiya Vidhya Bhavan (Mumbai) by Iqbal's group, 'Kirdar' the writers credit was given as Iqbal Niyazi and Sadiq Talpatri in the souveneir. (Sadiq also played the main role of 'Amma' in the play).
Most of the plays which Iqbal Niyazi claims to be his creations have the roots in Gujarati and Marathi languages plays which he has manipulated excellently in Urdu language.
To be a good writer one has to be frank with moral values and a good human-being!
I do agree with kitaab Keeda. Most recently he has given Kirdar's entry in Ekjute's Drama festival at Prithvi Theatre (Mumbai) of the play, 'Chor Chor Pakdo Pakdo' as written and directed by Iqbal Niyazi, whereas the play is a Gujarati play written by Shashi Wadia.
Kitaab Keeda and Annonymous are right! Iqbal Niyazi is a big liar and can go upto any extent to gain false and bogus publicity.
The play 'Chor Chor Pakro Pakro' was on 24th May 06.
I will give one more instance of 27th May 06 of Urdu Mela organised at Vasai. He staged a play, 'Ghar Ghar Ki Baat' and mentioned his name as writer in press and posters.(This can be verified from banners and Urdu daily Inquilaab' of 26th May 06) The play (poetry) is written by wellknown Urdu writer Sulaiman Khateeb.
Can he mention the names of the plays of Agha Hashr Kashmiri in which his father has acted ?
About his thesis on Habib Tanveer we are hearing it since last several years.
Can he give the name of 43 year old critic who is raving about his book and in which journal he gave the statement?
Now nearly a year has passed, where is his 'Kahaniyon Ka Rangmanch'.
How does people like Mohammad Wajihuddin write an article without knowing and confirming the facts and why do you encourage such people by publishing it?
Finally Iqbal Niyazi has a snake up his sleeves!
I will request all the people interested in this topic to email me their email address and phone number so that we can do a follow up on this.
shukriya,

The dates above in my comments are of APRIL and not MAY. The date for play, 'Chor Chor Pakdo Pakdo', as given on internet is 24th APRIL o6'.
The date of Urdu Mela is 27th APRIL 06' and 26th APRIL 06' for reference in Urdu daily, 'Inquilab'.
The age of
I am extremely sorry for this error!
Iqbal Niyazi !
He is a big black spot in urdu theatre . I am happy that urdu theatre people are alive and have guts to stand up and say for wrongs.Iqbal has always taken credit for work done by others , jaliyan wala baug(contributed by aslam parvez), Amma main kya karun(sadiq tadpatri) ..not only these there is a marathi play which was tranlated by one of his artist Aziz whichwas staged with iqbal niyazi's name "shab-o-roz" .
He not only takes credit for works done by other but also is triggering a negative energy in the new breed of urdu theatre artist
It is the high time that people should come together and Say "Iqbal Niyazi ..shame on u "
Fixing competitions , exploting new theatre savees is what this chap likes most...habib tanveer ji ..please do not get your work of life done by such a personality ..it is a sincere request ..
i do agree with theatre artist
iqbal has not written any single play
what he had done is called as an inspiration from stories or other plays
i donn think so he is a competent to write even an one act play.
he is good in grabing credit, and also pulling lags ... kyun iqbal M I right or wrong ....
the admin of the site should do some reserch before writing about such liar
he has earn lot of money from school competitons, for many competitions he work as an agent on a very little commission, where he organises comp. and also perform and some time he him self judge the competition also.
Admin should also write some thing about his ustad ..... Maha chor
Mr. Sajid Rasheed
who is responsible for putting the end on urdu acadamy competition ...
these peoples are black spot on our urdu stage.... bcoz of these politician we have lost our trust in competitions..now not a single trust worthy urdu competition left bcoz of these idiots
i remeber the day when sajid play was eliminated from urdu acadamy competition .... and also how he tried his effort to come into the final list
and how iqbal supported him, even though iqbal's play was in the final list but also unwillingly he supported this black bull bcoz he dont wanna take dushmani with him ....
they both should say
HUM SAB CHOR HAI ....
After going through all the above comments it is obvious that Urdu readers and theatre goers are well aware of the facts and have guts to point the wrong doings.
Iqbal Niyazi's character is a 'khuli kitab' in Urdu theatre and literature. Its a shame on the part of Mohammed Wajihuddin to write an artcle on such a man.
ADAKAR has rightly defined and given an appropriate caption, 'HUM SAB CHOR HAIN'. There was no need to glorify the names of Sajid Rasheed and Salam Bin Razzaq. They can be truly termed, 'chors' as they have no respect in literary circle.
Well done Adakar by exposing these dirty fellows.
